Thinner Asian eyelid skin looks better than thicker Asian eyelid skin in creation of double eyelid fold

In this blog, we will discuss why thinner Asian eyelid skin leads to a more natural- appearing double eyelid fold.  In order to understand why, we must first discuss what a double eyelid fold is.  A double eyelid fold is a connection of the skin to the underlying muscle (levator aponeurosis).  Therefore, as the eyelid lifts up, the fold occurs.  Most often, a surgically created fold creates a non-moving connection between the eyelid skin and the muscle that elevates the eyelid.  Therefore, a depression at the incision site is present and consistent whether your eyes are open or closed.  But in natural Asian double eyelids, a fold is not present with eyes closed.  All you see is a subtle crease or a line.  In thin-skin eyelids, the surgically created fold is not as depressed as in thick-skin eyelids.  The fold in thick-skin eyelids is much more depressed, and one can see this depression when the eyes are closed.  When the eyes are open, the folds are even more pronounced, and the depth of the double eyelid folds becomes more noticeable.

The increased depth of penetration of the fold with eye closing and opening causes a more unnatural appearance in thick Asian eyelids. We did not even mention the noticeable scarring that can occur on the eyelids.  Is there a solution for patients with thick Asian eyelid skin in creating a natural-appearing double eyelid fold?

In our next blog, we will discuss how an Asian double eyelid fold that moves overcomes this issue in thick Asian eyelids.  The dynamic (mobile) Asian double eyelid fold creates a natural-appearing double eyelid fold in both thin and thick Asian eyelids.
